MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS

Written by Francesca Sanders , Directed by Anne Beaumont

Paved with good intentions, a young man’s apprehensive journey to make a better future for himself leads to a secret, duplicitous masquerade of an existence which inexorably spirals out of control.

Roscoe is a young black man who has left his street life behind.  Fresh out of law school, he finds himself working in the mergers and acquisitions department of a large firm.   He is an instant success at the M & A game, excelling in persuasive arguments and high pressure selling.  Maintaining ties with his old neighborhood, Roscoe is unable and unwilling to tell his old friend about his newfound success and life.  Instead, he claims to have been in prison and out of a job.   With two apartments, two neighborhoods, and two complete and separate lives, Roscoe lives in an almost clandestine manner.  Due to an act of unforeseen violence the two worlds collide; and, as his tenuously constructed artifice collapses like a house of cards, all is exposed.

FRANCESCA SANDERS became a playwright by accident... literally. On the way to the theatre one day, she broke her elbow and while recuperating, wrote her first play.  Since then she has written 14 full length plays, several shorter plays (most published by Brooklyn Publishers) and won several awards. Some of her work has been seen from Oregon to New York.   Recent honors include: 2004 Oregon Literary Fellowship for Drama, 2004 Portland Civic Theatre Guild Award for Theatrical Excellence, nominated for Seattle Rep's New Work Festival, and a grant from the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation to research one of her newest plays, Ride The Rustling Wheat.
