PRODUCTIONS 2004-2005 Les Trois Coups Written by Eric Metayer, Translated by Mark Gordon Directed by Anne Beaumont Performed by: Barnaby Carpenter, Tamara Flannagan, Kristen Johansen, Lee Matthews On stage, what you believe in and what is real may be one and the same… What could have been a dry theoretical essay is written with so much humanity, humor and wit that I find Les Trois Coups captivating. What is it that defines a situation or an actor as real, truthful, or sincere? The main theme, theatre within the theatre, is given a new approach while echoing masterpieces by Pirandello, Jean Genet and Hamlet. The novelty of the set-up contrivance and the vulnerability of the characters make Les Trois Coups an intriguing comedy which should not go unacknowledged in New York City, home of recent non-traditional successes such as Urinetown, The Exonerated and Avenue Q, NPT for the opportunity to present the beginning of the play before a live audience. You, as an audience, are part of the process of developing this play and the necessary component for its existence. Tonight, the Trois Coups strike for you. About the title: Les Trois Coups or ‘the three hits” is a longstanding tradition in French theatre. In order to quiet the audience just before the curtain rises to start a play, a drum roll would occur followed by three taps of the drum. Anne Beaumont Presented as a Staged Reading in Summer Harvest, August 2004
