ComicStripTease is a work-in-progress originally presented this past August as part of Summer Harvest, NPT’s showcase for New Play Development Projects.  The piece has continued in development through the winter, and we are presenting this performance to solicit industry feedback in anticipation of a fall commercial production.  The performance runs approximately 60 minutes; refreshments will be served.

New Play Development at NPT is supported, in part, with public funds from the

NYS Council on the Arts, Services to the Field Program.

ARIEL NAZRYAN (Director of New Play Development) has been directing in New York City since 1996.  She assumed leadership of NPT’s New Play Development Program in 2003, where she guides the development of new and improvisationally developed works that speak specifically to NPT’s mission through two programs: Summer Harvest and GhostLight.  Ariel first developed ComicStripTease in the inaugural Summer Harvest workshop, and she is concurrently developing Reparations, a theatrical series in three parts, through GhostLight at NPT.  Other GhostLight works developed under Ariel’s directorship are The Calendar Project, The L-Curse, and The Excommunicated Call for a Vote, among others.  Her directing work has also been seen at The Cherry Lane Alternative, the Women’s Project Theatre, Blue Heron Arts Center, The Culture Project, Timsloft, and Interart.  She has been honored to assist acclaimed directors Susana Tubert, on the Off-Broadway hit Four Guys Named Jose, and Billie Allen, on WP&P and The Cherry Lane’s Off-Broadway productions of Saint Lucy’s Eyes, starring Ruby Dee.  Other favorite credits include Drowning, The Three Sisters, The Love of the Nightingale, and Hanjo, and the new plays Small Bodies, this really happened in Brooklyn, and Floor Show in the Sweet Life.  She has been a member of SSDC, the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab and Women’s Project & Productions Directors Forum, and is a teacher of the national Playwrights in Progress program for high school students.  She is a graduate of Duke University where she earned degrees in Drama and Women’s Studies and where she was awarded the Lentricchia Prize for Excellence in Directing.
