"GOOD NEWS" EDITION

NYSCA Doubles 2025 Grant!

We are delighted to announce that NPTC has received notice of a $40,000 grant from the New York State Council on the Arts for 2025! This is an amazing validation of our programs serving women and artists of color, and for reclaiming our diverse heritage as theatre artists.

Governor Kathy Hochul has been a strong advocate in funding for the arts in New York State, with an increased emphasis on support for organizations that serve marginalized and under-represented communities. We are deeply grateful for this support, and encourage everyone to send a note to the Governor's office to express their appreciation for this unparalled level of funding. Letting our elected officials know that we like what they are doing is a way to make sures it continues!

Discover The Discovery

Join us on December 5th at 7:00pm for an On Her Shoulders reading!

Complex relationships. Social maneuvering and manipulation. Secrets.

Written by Frances Sheridan in 1763, The Discovery offers biting satirical commentary about love and marriage among the noble class. Sheridan was the mother of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, the famous playwright and politician. His writing was heavily influenced by his mother's work but, as we have "discovered" so often in the On Her Shoulders research, the woman behind the man has received much less attention.

The reading is directed by Malini Singh McDonaldNiranjani Reddi is creating the "Play In Context" essay that situates the script and life of Frances Sheridan within its historical time and place. The evening begins with an Introduction by Reddi, then after the reading we'll serve refreshments and invite the audience to join us for a discussion.

ADMISSION IS BY DONATION
which helps support the artists involved in the presentation

Since its creation in 2013, the OHS program of readings has presented 64 plays by 52 writers from circa 955 to 1970 as well as special events on theatre women in the Suffrage and Radical Theatre Movements.

A unique aspect of the Reading Series is the Play In Context component, which includes a dramaturgical essay that analyzes each featured play within its own time and place; a substantial playwright biography; and an introduction to a reading or performance by a dramaturg who brings a personal perspective to the dramatist and her work. All readings include a post-performance talk-back with refreshments.
